Neuro-linguistic programming concept

NLP which stands for Neuro-linguistic programming is a psychotherapy that  can be define as the art and science of excellence by modelling successful people and obtain their results.  Those skills can be learnt by anyone and proved to be beneficial in numerous fields such as business, education and therapy.  NLP is a practical therapy using a set of models, skills and technique to impact on ones thoughts and actions.  The primary purpose is to improve the patient quality of life.  Other reason might be to remove a specific phobia or fear.

It is a result driven therapy,  implementing only what brings results and leaving all the rest.
NLP is really about looking for excellence in people in order to model them and use it for your own advantage and improve your life.  There is a wide array of benefits of using NLP including a more effective communication, better personal development and accelerated learning.

Some of the basic NLP concepts we want to discover in this section includes:

  1. NLP in 3 minutes
  2. Maps and filters in NLP
  3. About Learning in NLP
  4. About outcome in NLP
  5. About States in NLP
  6. About Communication in NLP
  7. About Rapport in NLP
  8. About Pace in NLP

Three minutes NLP seminar

If we were to condense an NLP book or seminar  into three minutes it would have those three fundamental concept:

  1. Outcome: know precisely the outcome, the results you want to reach.
  2. Acuity: open your senses to know what you are getting.
  3. Flexibility:  be ready to change until you reach the desired outcome.

What are Maps and filters in NLP?

NLP explain that we use our five senses to map the physical world. It is crucial to understand that the maps is not the territory.  It is  only a representation. The physical world is so complex and vast that we need to put filters to simplify it and give it meaning. Therefore you always get what you looking for.  Indeed if you look for success you will find success but if you look for problems the world can give you that as well. The world is neither good or bad but the filters you will use will make it so.  It is all about your interpretation (the map) and never about what actually happens (the real world).  Therefore change your map and you might change the territory that way it suits you better.

One of those useful maps is language (linguistic part in NLP).  Indeed using words you are able to map your thoughts. Your belief system is another filter. Indeed your value will have an impact the way you perceive the world. The whole concept behind NLP is by changing the filters or what they call Behavioural Frames you will change the world (or you world).  Some of the key concepts behind those frames include:

  1. Using outcomes instead of problems.  Always be solution oriented instead of problem oriented.
  2. Ask how instead of why question.  It will help you understand the structure of the problem.
  3. Use feedback instead of failure.  The idea behind is that failure are only results (but perhaps not the desired one).
  4. Consider possibility rather than necessities.
  5. Have an attitude of curiosity and fascination instead of making assumption.

About learning, unlearning and relearning

Another key-concept is the idea of our conscious and unconscious mind. Knowing that our consciousness is limited to seven (plus or minus two) pieces of information, then a lot of actions or learning process is executed by our consciousness. Therefore most of the things we do and perhaps the things we do the best are actuality done unconsciously.

What is the stage of learning?
There are four stages of learning.  Those include:

  1. Unconsciousness incompetence where not only you do not know how to do something but you don’t know that you don’t know.
  2. Conscious incompetence when you start to realize about your limitation.
  3. Conscious competence where you know but it takes all your energy.
  4. Unconsciousness competence where your master the skill and don’t have to consciously think about it.

About outcome in NLP

It is important to notice that your outcomes should be the following:

  1. Positive: define what you want instead what you do not want.
  2. On part: define what you will do (it should be under control)
  3. Specific: should be as precise as possible
  4. Evidence: know exactly what you will see here and feel when you obtained
  5. Resources: know what you need to get the outcome
  6. Size-it: must be nor to large, nor to small but the right size

About States

NLP claims that the fastest way to change your life, a specific problem or any situation is by modifying the state you are in.  First you need to identify your present state.  This includes your current thoughts, your feelings and behaviour.  Then you need to clearly visualize the desired state. It should be something that you really want and known exactly how you will feel, think and what your behaviour will be.  For example, for  a student doing a certification it could be: when I will receive my course diploma I will feel very happy, confident and will go celebrate.  In order to reach the desired state there are different NLP sources and techniques to use.  This include but is not limited to changing our physiology, nutrition, strength and stamina.

About Communication

Communication is another key element in NLP. You always communicate even when you don’t say anything.  Many research have proven over and over that it is not only about words. In fact verbal communication only represents 7% of all our communication, 38% is your voice and tonality and more than half is your body language.  Therefore NLP has a big interest in your physiology, as changing your posture will have an impact on your thoughts and feelings.

About Rapport

In different fields would that be education, therapy, business or selling, the power of rapport is crucial to create trust, confidence and participation. When there is true rapport,  communication is in a flow. A good example is between two dancers where their body complements on another.   In NLP creating deep rapport is essential to create trust and success. Some techniques would be to mimic the body language such as the head, the eyes or the movements. The underlining concept is that people who are like each other, like each other.  Therefore using NLP skills in a conscious manner enable to create rapport with almost anyone.  It is a way to created the bridge to better understand the other party. We can say the rapport is the ability to create the responds and communication is the respond you create.

About Pace

Once you created a bridge using rapport and communication with another person you may then direct into a specific direction. It is about understanding the other person perception in a respectful manner.  You must however be ready to adapt your behaviour, in order to fit with the other person and the different social situations. The key is to be able to change yourself but still keep your integrity.   As a famous saying goes “NLP is the martial art of communication: grateful, enjoyable and very effective.”

Neuro-linguistic programming origins and development

NLP was firs invented at the University of Santa Cruse in California in 1972. It was created by assistant professor John Grender and Richard Bandler.  Their work about how people become effective was influence by different psychological concept.  It included the words Neuro-linguistic develops by Alfred Korsypski, author of general semantics.
Another concept created by British anthropologist Gregory Bateson was that each person creates their own world perception and there is no such thing as reality. The actual NLP model was based on the experience of three different therapists including:  Erickson, Satir and Perls.  Their purpose was to find out the difference that made different. In other words what was the elements that distinguish successful people from the rest.

Milton Erickson, a psychiatrist-hypnotherapist invented the Milton model of language which permited people make raped change.

Virginia Satir as a respected family therapist developed the Satir categories. It is  a set of five personality traits found in someone behaviour.

Finally Fritz Perls the founder of the gestalt therapy brought us the idea that changes happens in the present as opposed to the past as in the psychical-analytical model.

As a study first invented in academic circle,  NLP become widely spread in business and alternative therapist over the last 30 years.

Neuro-linguistic programming objectives

The main objective of NLP is to achieve excellence by following a strategy.  Those NLP strategies will be covered in the following two topics:

  1. About strategy in NLP
  2. Micro and Macro strategy in NLP

What is a strategy in NLP?

A strategy in NLP is defined by the way you order and sequence when producing a specific outcome.  It is a recipe for the brain to produce a desired result. Below are the most known key types of strategies:

  1. Learning strategy
  2. Decision-making strategy
  3. Motivation strategy
  4. Buying strategy
  5. Deep love strategy
  6. Problem strategy
  7. Smoking, drinking, overeating strategy

Micro and Macro strategy in NLP

In NLP strategies can be divided into two different types: Micro and Macro strategy.  A micro strategy includes all the unconscious elements that affect your behaviours.  As for the macro strategy includes the actions unconscious and conscious you take towards a specific result
